Dental Fillings Can Treat Minor Cavities

Posted .

Sometimes even a consistent daily oral hygiene routine and remembering to have a dental checkup performed every six months, simply isn’t sufficient for preventing a cavity from developing on one of your teeth. Fortunately, your dental exams at Pelham Oaks Dentistry will catch any early signs of gum disease, oral cancer and tooth decay, to start the treatment process.

If a cavity is small our dentist might be able to treat the tooth by installing a dental filling. This treatment can usually be performed during a second outpatient appointment.

It starts with numbing the affected tooth and the surrounding gums. Once you are comfortable we will carefully remove all areas of decayed tooth enamel. Then, we will prepare the dental filling material.

A composite dental filling is created from a special type of resin which can be shaded to mimic the appearance of the surrounding tooth enamel. This type of material is often a good choice for treating an area that will appear when you smile.

We might also recommend performing preventive treatments to help reduce your chances of suffering future cavities. This might include installing dental sealants or performing a fluoride treatment.
